Come down to "West End Idol" and Help Overturn a Musical Injustice!

Last Monday, April 26, a shocking scene played out at the Oasis Pub's West End Idol competition. Performer DJ Barens had delivered a dynamite rendition of Patty Smyth's 80's classic "Goodbye to You". Yet, when the votes were tallied, the audience took her song title literally and ousted her from the contest!

The judges had called her firecracker-hot performance the "best of the evening", and in an unheard-of gesture, Ryan Egan, the razor-tongued "Simon" of the panel, actually emerged from behind the dais, applauding, to show just how impressed he was.

Yet at the end of the night, the unthinkable happened - DJ received the lowest number of votes and was removed from competition. Yes, even the girl who had barfed up her ten martinis in the ladies' room, then sleepwalked through her performance, managed to receive more ballots. It was a travesty of musical justice to rival the ouster of diva Jennifer Hudson from "American Idol".

Most of the blame goes to the voting system whereby singers with the most friends - and who consume the greatest quantity of the special, ballot-earning drinks and appetizers, flogged by the host at every opportunity - can dominate the voting, defying the judges' opinions or even common sense.

But there is a ray of hope! One of the judges has elected to use her "wildcard" option to restore DJ to the lineup next Monday night. But after that, she's at the mercy of a crowd of biased, drunken revelers. That means there's only one thing to do.

Stack that crowd with OUR biased, drunken revelers!

Non- (or light) drinker? Don't worry! There are alternative purchases (chicken strips and wings) that will gain you a ballot, too. So even us uptight sober people can fully participate in the hilarity, and the voting!

I should mention that West End Idol is a ton of fun, with a lot of great singers and laughs galore, whoever you're rooting for. So if you want to support some great local vocals, or just want to have a great time, please join me next Monday night, May 3rd, at the Oasis Pub!

The Oasis is located at Thurlow @ Davie (above the Denny's). "Idol" starts at 7:30 p.m. (best to get there early and fill up those seats). See you there!
