Jeni’s Picks for the week ahead

Dear Picks People… better late than never. Life remains very challenging time wise at the moment.  Additions will be made so please check the website for updates.

If you are interested in “Two Views from the Sylvia” opening November 8 act fast as it is an extremely popular show. Also, I want to draw your attention to The East Van Panto opening November 29 (always a smash hit) as some dates are already sold out.  Don’t be disappointed. Frankie’s Jazz Club – Harley Card Quintet

Since 2005 Toronto-based guitarist and composer Harley Card has lead his own group, the Harley Card Quartet, showcasing Harley’s music and the collaborative, spirited playing of all the musicians. With strong roots in swing and jazz traditions, the group prioritizes melody in their approach to Harley’s contemporary leaning compositions. The quartet is touring to celebrate the release of Harley’s third album as a leader, The Greatest Invention introducing eleven new compositions. With Harley Card guitar, Matt Newton piano, Dan Fortin bass, and Ethan Ardelli drums.  Cover $15

Frankie’s Jazz Club – B3 for Bunny: From New York, Akiko Tsuruga

This event runs from November 3, 2017 until November 4, 2017.

The legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith describes her this way: “Akiko’s playing is like watching a flower blooming, a bird spreading her wings in the music world. Akiko is here to stay.” Since landing in the mecca for jazz, New York City, Akiko has been embraced not only by audiences, but by her fellow musicians, as one of the top organ players in the city. She has shared to stage with Jimmy Cobb, Frank Wess, and Lou Donaldson to name a few. Her latest album features the great Jeff Hamilton on drums and Graham Dechter on guitar. With Joe Magnarelli trumpet, Cory Weeds tenor saxophone, and Julian MacDonough drums. Cover $20.

Blue Martini – Jason De Couto Organ Trio Free event

Led by Jason de Couto (Soulstream, The Phonix), this cooking trio plays a mix of jazz, funk, Latin, and blues, channelling influences ranging from Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff, to Larry Goldings and Joey DeFrancesco. With guitarist/saxophonist Adam Rohrlick, drummer Nino diPasquale.  

World New Music Days 2017 – Hard Rubber Riot Ensemble

For the ISCM World New Music Days 2017, Hard Rubber New Music presents a 45-minute version of Riot, a powerful multi-media work-in-progress conceived by composer John Korsrud. Riot tells the story of the shocking and destructive Vancouver hockey riot of 2011 that brought hundreds of arrests and millions of dollars of destruction. Korsrud’s musical response to the event promises to be an uncompromising look at mob mentality, privilege, and culpability. Hard Rubber Riot Ensemble John Korsrud, composer & director; Nino DiPasquale, Eliot Doyle, Tim Proznick, Randall Stoll, percussion; Jillian Lebeck, keyboard; Ron Samworth, guitar; Laurence Mollerup, bass; Mark Ferris, violin; Peggy Lee, cello; Cameron Andres, vocals. York Theatre – Missing

This event runs from November 3, 2017 until November 11, 2017.

World Premiere Chamber Opera Missing tells a story everybody knows, about a woman no one remembers. Set in Vancouver and along the Highway of Tears, this music drama is being created to give voice to the story of Canada’s missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls   The chamber opera follows the fate of two young women – one Indigenous and one non-Indigenous – whose lives become tragically intertwined.The young women will be portrayed by Métis Canadian coloratura soprano Melody Courage and soprano Caitlin Wood.  Tickets $22-65.

Petunia & The Vipers every Monday in the Lounge all winter long! Mondays are the new Fridays!   A man rooted in as much talent as mystery, Petunia is a Canadian country treasure. His illustrious career began with busking his way through Canada and the NYC subways, playing over 150 shows a year to enthralled audiences. Since then, he has racked up the achievements with several celebrated solo releases and frequent tours spanning continents. Alone, Petunia is a talent unapologetically shocking fans with his versatility. Together with his Vancouver-based backing band, The Vipers, he is a fireball ripping and roaring with eclectic instrumentation and an energy only attainable through big band camaraderie.
