The 2018 Jazz Festival is only 3 weeks away!!  Get your tickets before they are all gone. More info here.   The Ticketfly website is apparently fixed. 10 days of music and 150 free shows. More info here.

Vancity Theatre – Boom For Real: The Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat

Both an inspiring introduction to the nascent genius of Jean-Michel Basquiat and an immersive time-trip to the creative caldron that was New York City in the dark and dirty early 80s, Sara Driver’s documentary has a you-are-there quaility that can’t be reproduced (in one anecdote, Jim Jarmusch recalls how he was walking down the street with his girlfriend, Driver, and Basquiat said hi, ran off, and met them at the next crosswalk with a flower which he presented to her). At this point in his life Basquiat was mostly couch-surfing, but creating art out of anything within reach. It was the first dawning of the street artist, and SAMO was born. But he was painting too (including his friend’s clothes and refridgerators), making music, and beginning to make waves. Tickets $13.  ** Also showing on June 12/13**

Alpen Club – Swing Night with Impressions Big Band

Following the success of the first Swing Night at the Vancouver Alpen Club, the Impressions Big Band are returning to the Alpen for another evening of swinging dance music. The Vancouver Alpen Club features one of the best dance floors in Vancouver (it’s big and on springs, like the Commodore Ballroom). Impressions will perform an extensive repertoire of swing dance tunes, with many featuring guest vocalist Peter Juric.  Selections from Swing Era dance band greats like Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman, along with Latin favorites and some contemporary pop tunes. Vancity Theatre – Bill Evans: Time Remembered

Music Mondays One of the giants of jazz piano, Bill Evans was part of the Miles Davis sextet that recorded Kind of Blue in 1959, the best-selling jazz album of all time. With Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian he recorded the seminal Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie, and later formed an equally successful partnership with bassist Chuck Israels. But Evans’ beautiful compositions and performances belied a troubled life, beset with personal tragedy and, almost inevitably, drug addiction. Eight years in the making, Spiegel’s documentary is the definitive portrait of Bill Evans. Tickets $11
