14th instalment of “Adventures in Pedal Steel” celebrating the work of the the two undisputed kings of west coast “hippie steel”: Buddy Cage from New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Bobby Black from Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Lookout Society will host it’s 10th Annual H’Arts for the Homeless Event. This year’s theme takes a close look at Housing and how a warm and safe home changes lives for the better.   Live painters and art auction. Performers including Chris Ronald, Mike Battie, Ladies in White, Burying Ground, The Hot Club of Mars, Brooke VanDyk, Gloria and Harold, and more TBA. Proceeds from Lookout Society’s 10th Annual awards & benefit will support the purchase of H’Arts House – a new residence that will assist vulnerable people in the community.  Tickets $60

Tyrant Studios – Krapp’s Last Tape October 5-26, 2018

Seven Tyrants Theatre, Vancouver’s Jessie Award winning independent theatre company, opens its first season of work in their new performance venue with Samuel Beckett’s absurdist one-man masterpiece: Krapp’s Last Tape. The production stars Jessie Award nominated actor Linden Banks as “Krapp”, and is directed by David Thomas Newham, who additionally provides the lighting and set designs. Tuesdays through Fridays at 8pm  (* No show on Mondays) Saturdays at 4pm Sundays at 7pm Tickets: $26

Tyrant Studios – Tony Wilson’s Longhand Trio

Longhand is a co-operative trio comprised of Syke Brooks (drums), Russell Sholberg (bass), and Tony Wilson (guitar). Longhand has a varied repertoire ranging from high energy free improv to melancholy tunes with beautiful melodies. Sonny & Brownie’s Last Train by the Ambassador of the Blues, Guy Davis and international harmonica sensation Fabrizio Poggi was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Traditional Blues. This marks the first Grammy nomination in the 30 year career for Guy Davis and also for Fabrizio Poggi. Beautiful dark vocals by Davis, who also delivers impressive guitar work on both six and twelve stings, while the harmonica playing of Poggi equals the virtuosity of Terry. – Jazzism, The Netherlands. Since making her sold-out TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival debut at Pyatt Hall in 2017, Nashville native Kandace Springs has made a lot of friends with her engaging talent. As The Guardian said in a four-star review, “she has a rare ability that can’t be taught—to sound like an old soul, just doing what comes naturally.” The singer/songwriter/pianist makes warm and sophisticated soul, pop, and jazz with a stunning voice and original material that she showcased on her debut recording, Soul Eyes (Blue Note). This spring, she released her EP Black Orchid. Taking inspiration from the likes of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Lauryn Hill, the organic, intimate, and deeply soulful sound of this “suave songstress” (Wall Street Journal) is remarkably fresh but universally appealing. Prolific Brooklyn-based saxophonist Noah Preminger is a winner of a Downbeat Magazine’s Rising Star Best Tenor Saxophonist award, and has recorded over twelve critically acclaimed albums. The New York Times declares: “Mr. Preminger designs a different kind of sound for each note, an individual destiny and story.”  Recent releases include Meditations On Freedom, a duo album with pianist Frank Carlberg, and a recording of the music of Otto Preminger’s films. He has played and/or recorded with the likes of Dave Holland, John Patitucci, Rob Garcia, Joe Lovano, Victor Lewis, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, and Roscoe Mitchell. Cover $25
