Dear Picks People…  Fringe Festival continues.  Two recommendations thus far.  Monica Lee’s “Girls Night in”  at Havana Theatre and Tymisha Harris in “Josephine” at the Cultch.  Both shows are selling out so buy tickets soon for the remaining performances.   Link here.

Tenor saxophonist Jerry Cook has been a staple of the Vancouver blues and roots music scene for over 30 years and now makes his Frankie’s debut. Influenced by Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris, he’s put together a stellar jazz quartet to play soulful standards, ballads, and originals. The Quartet will be recording it’s first album (on Cellar Live) shortly after this performance. With special guest David Sikula guitar, Chris Gestrin piano, John Lee bass, and Jesse Cahill drums. The Heatley – Adventures in Steel Guitar #17: Bakersfield By Donation

The 17th instalment of Adventures in Steel Guitar,  pays tribute to the Bakersfield sound. The Bakersfield sound, twangier and harder edged than the Nashville sound, was pioneered by Wynn Stewart in the mid-50’s and perfected by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the 60’s and then carried on by Dwight Yoakam in the 80’s. Pedal steel players like Tom Brumley and Ralph Mooney were crucial to the development of the original Bakersfield sound. Expect instrumentals recorded by both of these players as well some Bakersfield classics sung by some favourite singers: Rich Hope, Ben Laborie, Barb Wilkins, Rupert Lindsay, Trevor Murray, and the Heatley’s very own Michael Brennan. 17th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival Free event

The Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival is back for the 17th year. Live music, entertainment, beautiful art displays, food, and more. Frankie’s Jazz Club – From NYC- Pianist George Colligan

George Colligan is not only one of the great jazz pianists of his generation, but he has earned an international reputation as a multi-instrumentalist (drums/trumpet/organ/keyboards), composer, accompanist, teacher, and bandleader. Winner of the 2015 DownBeat magazine Critics Poll (Keyboard), he has had a long association with living jazz legend Jack DeJohnette. With over 130 albums to date as an accompanist, Colligan has worked with a long list of jazz greats, including Buster Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, and many others. His latest album, Nation Divided from Whirlwind Records is his 30th as a bandleader. Colligan, a New York resident for 15 years, now resides in Portland where he is an Associate Professor at Portland State University. With John Lee bass and Jesse Cahill drums. Cover $17.50
