Jeni’s Picks for the week ahead

Dear Picks People…  off on a special vacation.  I should be back in time to produce an October 21-28 edition.  In the meantime, happy beginning of the fall everyone and please keep supporting live music, theatre and the arts in Vancouver.

Weekly Picks on hiatus until October 21, 2019

This event runs from September 23, 2019 until October 20, 2019.

The website and weekly mail out will resume 3rd week of October.    I have gifted myself a fall trip in celebration of a big birthday earlier in the summer to a place I have never visited before and where I hope to be attending some music events like this one.  Sorry folks… you are on your own for a while!

Organ Night at The Emerald – Cory Weeds B3 Trio By Donation

This event runs from September 11, 2019 until October 30, 2019.

Every Wednesday, saxophonist Cory Weeds will take over the lounge at The Emerald Supper Club with organist Nick Peck and drummer Jesse Cahill for a night of greasy, funky, nasty, blues, dirty organ grooves! Admission by donation!

Roundhouse Community Centre – Reading the Bones

This event runs from September 18, 2019 until September 28, 2019.

Kokoro Dance presents the world premiere of Reading the Bones, a work for six dancers distilled from the 33-year history of Kokoro Dance’s butoh-inspired creations. Kokoro Dance co-founders, Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, are reimagining choreography from their past works, and setting their powerful, provocative, and passionate movement on Katie Cassady (in her 20’s), Molly McDermott (in her 30’s), Deanna Peters (close to her 40’s), Salomé Nieto (in her 50’s), and themselves. Bourget is now in her 60’s and Hirabayashi, in his 70’s. This 50-year generational spread gives uniquely rich and deep nuances to the performances.  Tickets $25/$30

Frankie’s Jazz Club – Sam Kirmayer featuring Ben Paterson

September 25, 2019 8:00 pm

Montreal-based guitarist Sam Kirmayer has “no pretence or posturing, only musical sincerity” (Jazz Guitar Life). CBC Music included him in their list of “The 35 Best Canadian Jazz Musicians Under 35.” Sam’s sophomore album, High And Low (Cellar Live), features first call Montreal drummer Dave Laing, and internationally acclaimed New York City-based organist Ben Paterson, who Downbeat has described as “as soulful a pianist/organist as exists anywhere.” With Ben Paterson organ and Dave Laing drums.  Cover $15

Red Lion Bar – Johnston and friends Free event

This event runs from September 13, 2019 until October 18, 2019.
