For the next week or so, I'll be performing in two, count 'em, TWO musicals! Both of them are fun-filled, tuneful entertainments so I hope you can come on out to at least one.
Applause! Musicals in Concert presents:
ON THE TOWN
Applause! Musicals presents the rarely-staged original musical (as made into the film with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra). Three sailors have 24 hours to see the sights of New York City - and find romance too! In this madcap tale, they find both. On the way we're treated to a lot of laughs, a toe-tapping melodies and full-blown dance numbers.
Applause! presents rare or little-known musicals in "concert format" - where all cast members and chorus have their script and music with them at all times. That way we can rehearse for just six days before we go in front of an audience! Costumes are minimal, sets even less so - but from these limits comes wonderful inventiveness. We create a taxicab, a dinosaur, two apartments and three nightclubs - with little more than the people on stage and a few chairs. Yet the broad humour and energy of the original show comes roaring through.
Look for me in the small but pivotal role of the "bill poster" who starts the plot on its merry way. I'm also a construction worker, a cop, part of the taxi and dinosaur, and a bongo player at the "Congacabana Club"!
ON THE TOWN plays on June 22, 24, and 26 at 7pm, and June 25 at 2pm, at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Tickets are $20. For tickets, call (604) 734-0904 or book online at www.applausemusicals.com!
The Broadway Chorus presents:
ONE DAY, ONE LIFE
is thrilled to present this song-and-dance musical revue in two acts.
In the hilarious first act (One Day) we visit the worlds most dysfunctional office, where working girls vie for promotions, knowing When Youve Got It, Flaunt It, while the down-trodden men insist I Want to Be a Producer. Almost everyone agrees I Wish I Could Go Back to College, or at the very least, return Home. Fantasy and reality collide in this hilarious send-up of the work environment.
In the moving second act (One Life) the Chorus performs songs from every stage of life, from birth to death (and beyond!) Well grow up (Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen), fall in love (I Can Hear the Bells), raise children (Stop Time), and ultimately realize What a Wonderful Way to Die!.
One Day / One Life runs Thursday, June 30th to Saturday, July 2nd at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island, with a discounted preview on June 29th. Showtime is 8:00pm. Tickets booked in advance are 16 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, and $11 for children 12 and under, and are $1 more at the door for unreserved tickets. For tickets, either e-mail ashley@PROTECTED or call (778) 322-7182.
