Jeni’s Picks for the week ahead

Dear Picks People… I’ve aded a few spooky events happening this week to get you in the mood for upcoming Halloween night.

Just to say, that every night there is music happening at the Libra Room, some of it indeed very good music, but since the calendar remains blank I cannot share it with you unless individual musicians/bands give me the heads up.  A shame.

The Cobalt – A Tom Petty Tribute

  Pianist Matt Mitchell has made a solo piano recording (his first) of compositions by Tim Berne, his longtime leader in Snakeoil. The compositions of iconic saxophonist/bandleader Tim Berne have earned renown for their intensely kinetic, exceedingly intricate quality, as performed around the world by his various groups over the past four decades. With two short opening sets by solo musicians John Paton saxophone and James Meger bass. Tickets $25

        A double bill as part of the curated series Contemporary Iranian Cinema A Very Ordinary Citizen Director Majid Barzegar’s sly, slow-burning comedy/drama/romance/thriller, co-written by Iranian cinema luminary Jafar Panahi (Taxi), is shot in long takes and treats the subject of dementia in seniors in no very ordinary manner. “The title character is a solitary and taciturn old man in Tehran whose days revolve around napping and buying bread. His son, exiled to Canada, wants his father to visit, so he hires a young female travel agent to help the old man make arrangements; the father takes a shine to her, though his means of showing affection make her increasingly uncomfortable My Brother Khosrow Shahab Hosseini, named Best Actor at Cannes in 2016 for his role in Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman, stars in this psychological drama, the directorial debut of Ehsan Biglari. Hosseini plays titular Khosrow, a man with bipolar disorder whose older brother Naser (Naser Hashemi) is a successful dentist in Tehran. When Khosrow is forced to move in with Naser and his family for a few weeks, it opens old wounds and awakens Naser’s own demons.

Frankie’s Jazz Club – Craig Scott Quintet plays Milt Jackson’s In a new Setting

Vibraphonist Craig Scott teams up again with tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds to present selections from the Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner album In A New Setting. The Scott/Weeds collaboration, the acclaimed Introducing The Craig Scott Quintet on Cellar Live spent nine weeks on the Jazz Week Charts, and presented music that both Craig and Cory drew from Ray Brown, Cedar Walton, and other great bebop players and composers as conceptual influences. When Milt Jackson collaborated with pianist McCoy Tyner, the result was a more post-bop approach in both harmonic and melodic concept. Paying homage to this landmark 1964 album, Cory and Craig are joined by pianist Chris Gestrin, bassist Paul Rushka, and drummer Jesse Cahill. Cover $15

Frankie’s Jazz Club – From New York: Eric Alexander Quintet

This event runs from October 27, 2017 until October 28, 2017.

Eric Alexander, known for his high-octane energy and bravura technique, leads a quartet that features Miles Black piano, Paul Rushka bass, and Jesse Cahill drums. Frank Alkyer writing in Downbeat Magazine says, “Eric Alexander can play the tenor saxophone—never doubt that. He has the chops, power and passion that make him one of the most blazingly bad-assed saxophonists of his generation.” Cover $20.   ***Also on Saturday 28th October**

Mountain View Cemetery – All Souls Free event
