Dine Out Vancouver Festival January 19- February 4

This event runs from January 19, 2018 until February 4, 2018.

This event runs from January 16, 2018 until February 4, 2018.

International Performing Arts Festival – Theatre, Dance, Multimedia, Music & Film. 64 events. Artists from 11 countries. 2018 Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival January 20-February 14

This event runs from January 20, 2018 until February 14, 2018.

Spanning a total of 26 days, this popular event will feature 35 participating cafés, bakeries, chocolatiers, ice-cream shops, and pastry joints offering 75 mouth-watering flavours. More info in this article

Gold Saucer – Megan Stewart and Hannah Hall Band Pay-what-you-can

Pacific Cinematheque – Still Night, Still Light

After five acclaimed shorts (including La Ronde, Canada’s Top Ten 2011), Québécois writer-director Sophie Goyette makes a bold transition to features with the dreamy, delicate Still Night, Still Light, winner of the Bright Future Award at Rotterdam (1st Canadian feature to win an award at this festival in 46 years). Suffused with longing and regret, and set in a world of people haunted by the choices they’ve made and the loved ones they’ve lost, Goyette’s brave, beautiful film was shot in three countries (Canada-Mexico-China) and tells the stories of three connected characters. Eliane is a young, adrift Montreal woman who lands in Mexico, where she gives piano lessons. Romes is a Mexican man contending with midlife. A staple of Manhattan’s art scene in the 1980s, erstwhile Vancouverite Richard Hambleton painted menacing, shadowy figures all over a metropolis that was equally dangerous and exciting. Covering the street-art pioneer’s heyday (when he was frequently mentioned in the same breath as Basquiat) and his subsequent fall from grace, Oren Jacoby crafts a vivid portrait of the often toxic New York art scene.  Tickets $11 Also showing on Feb 3 and 7

The Cultch – Khari Wendell McClelland’s Freedom Singer Album Release

The Cultch and Soft Cedar are proud to present the release of the album version of Freedom Singer. Khari collected and interpreted songs that might have accompanied his great-great-great grandmother Kizzy as she fled US slavery into Canada during the 1800s through The Underground Railroad. He uses a range of styles like hip-hop, gospel, folk and soul to create a bridge from past to present. To celebrate the release, Khari will be joined by Tonye Aganaba, The Sojourners, Desiree Dawson, Jillian Christmas, and many others for an unforgettable celebration of Black history. Tickets $20

Rogue Folk Club -Paul Pigat’s Boxcar Campfire + Lynn Miles

Paul Pigat’s many fans are probably more familiar with him as the front man of the rockin’ Cousin Harley band. You might think that acoustic music is a new diversion for the already multi-talented Vancouver musician. Not so. His love for this type of music started back in high school when he discovered the genius of Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. But not everyone is familiar with this side of Paul … that of emotive singer-songwriter. Lynn Miles is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/songwriters. With seven albums to her credit, the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Solo Album of the Year, she has certainly found her strength over time. Through a career that has seen her move from Ottawa to Los Angeles and back again, with stops in Nashville and Austin, she has always written music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability. Frankie’s Jazz Club – B3 for Bunny: Brian Charette

This event runs from February 2, 2018 until February 3, 2018.

New York-based organist Brian Charette has established himself as a leading man in modern jazz. Charette is a Grammy-nominated, Hammond-endorsed artist who was the winner of the 2014 Downbeat Critics’ Poll in the Rising Star: Organ category and has climbed to fourth place in the main organ cat2015 Critic’s Poll. This year Brian also won The Hot House Magazine Fan’s Decision Jazz Award for Best Organist in New York and has had three releases on the Jazz Week Top 20. Brian has worked with notable artists such as Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, and many more. Opening reception of new works by Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun. Following his recent solo exhibition at Canada House (London UK) this exhibition will share new paintings and works on paper developed by the artist. Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun is an advocate for contemporary indigenous issues in Canada. Especially relevant to his practice are the elements of Coast Salish cosmology, Northwest Coast Design and the Western Landscape Tradition.

Influenced by Gram Parsons, Ryan Adams, Neil Young and country period Grateful Dead, Just A Season’s songs recall a time when folk, rock and country met in a sunbaked embrace.

10th instalment of “Scott Smith’s Adventures in Steel Guitar” pays tribute to the legendary Don Helms. Don’s steel guitar was featured on over 100 Hank Williams recordings (including 10 Number 1 hits), and his memorable intros and solos are the very definition of the classic country music sound. In addition to playing with Hank, Don also recorded with Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzel and Loretta Lynn, as well as recording some fine solo instrumental albums.
