![]() Hastings Park – The Japanese Problem to September 29, 2018September 18, 2018
JAPANESE PROBLEM is the award-winning, site-responsive experience about the Japanese Canadian incarceration at Hastings Park. In 1942 over 8,000 Canadians were detained in barns at Hastings Park. JAPANESE PROBLEM invites a small audience into a stall, which residents have turned into a temporary home and place of wonder, as they are filled with the uncertainty of their next destination. The piece exists in the contemporary moment simultaneously, where evidence of Hastings Parks’ former tenants has been erased, where survivors are uncertain if they want their names included in a memorial; and where refugees to North America are being treated in a fashion that is terrifyingly familiar. **Selling out so book early** Various prices and performance dates. ![]() Cabrito Tapas – Latin Groove Night with Stephanie PedrazaSeptember 18, 2018 5:30 pm

Back in 2005, Mike Farris cracked open the hallway door when, for the first time since the age of 15, he was clean and sober. Recording what would become the critically acclaimed Salvation in Lights (2007), a resurrected Mike eagerly anticipated the future. But with two ruptured discs, back surgery and the death of his beloved manager Rose McGathy all within a few weeks of the record’s release, a rolling fog settled in. Nevertheless, Mike’s career picked up steam. He won an Americana Music Award for New/Emerging Artist in 2008, followed by a Dove Award in 2010. He opened shows for Patti LaBelle, Mavis Staples, Blind Boys of Alabama, Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby. Mike’s spirited, soul-gospel fusion had found an enthusiastic audience but he was still struggling with addiction issues. What eventually emerged from that fertile ground is Shine For All The People, the evolution of true sobriety, of finding a new identity as a servant, first as a man but also as an artist. Shine For All the People, the 2015 Grammy Award winner for Best Roots Gospel album, bears witness to the determination of putting one foot in front of the other and to the power of music to get ![]() Frankie’s Jazz Club – Hip Pocket Plays David SanbornSeptember 20, 2018 8:00 pm

Bright Moments at Western Front New York alto saxophonist and composer Darius Jones presents the most recent of the projects in his Man’ish Boy epic, an ambitious multi-recording program reflecting his unique aesthetic and cosmology. Le bébé de Brigitte (Lost in Translation) adds the distinctive talents of French singer and composer, Emilie Lesbros, to sing a rich and varied suite of songs by her and Jones (composed together and separately) that are animated by his massive-toned alto playing. By turns introspective, swinging, and searing, the suite—with lyrics in both English and French—is steeped in the histories of jazz and chanson, but reflects a highly personal shared musical language that Jones’s superb ensemble fleshes out evocatively through improvisation: John Escreet (piano, Rhodes), Sean Conly (bass), and Ches Smith (drums).
